Fitness Isn’t Just Workouts—Here’s What Really Matters

Hi Reader,

It takes more than just time and sweat in the gym to make lasting changes to your fitness. While that's definitely a great starting point, there are four key components to achieving your fitness goals that you'll need to devote your attention and efforts toward.

Movement

The obvious starting point for a personal trainer like myself. Movement encompasses your workouts, recreation, work, and more. Show up consistently for workouts and you can quickly expect to see improvements in your:

  • Strength
  • Energy
  • Mood
  • Sleep

Nutrition

Nutrition is much more than just which foods you do or don't put in your face hole each day. You can improve your nutrition by improving the way you eat your meals, how you think about food, and how you manage the spaces in which you eat. A little planning ahead with your nutrition will help you:

  • Fuel your workouts
  • Increase your energy
  • Change your body composition
  • Speed up your recovery

Recovery

We all enjoy a little extra sleep. However, recovery also includes movement between your more challenging workouts and stressful days. Eating well to fuel your workouts also aids in your recovery and sleep. Even getting outside into the sunshine and green spaces can help us to reduce stress and recover better. Putting effort and planning for your recovery helps you:

  • Maintain motivation and consistency in your workouts
  • Make better food choices
  • Have more energy each day
  • Progress faster with your fitness goals

Mindset

Your mindset underpins the efforts we're able to put forth in the other keys to our fitness. Some aspects of mindset are under our direct control and others are not. It takes a change in mindset to decide to make changes in your health and fitness or hire a personal trainer to help you. You can improve your mindset through setting sustainable goals, organizing and planning ahead, surrounding yourself with others that support your endeavors, or even journaling and meditation. Focusing on improving your mindset is important for:

  • Overcoming barriers to your fitness goals
  • Getting started when motivation is low
  • Maintaining balance when you've got a lot going on
  • Getting the most out of the time you have for movement, nutrition, and recovery so you can reach your goals.

Putting it all together

Each of the keys to success in your fitness goals is synergistic with the others. Movement improves our Mindset, which can help you make better Nutrition choices, which improves your Recovery, which leads to more Movement, and so on so forth.

Starting with workouts is great because it can be so immediately gratifying to accomplish. But sustainable progress requires efforts in each component. Overtime those efforts may adjust as you feel more confident and competent so that some things can run on autopilot while you focus more on others.

Which component feels like your biggest opportunity for improvement right now? Write me back a one word email with the component and I'll help you with some actionable tactics you can start implementing.

Keep moving,

Brian Tabor

PS

You still have until June 1st to start a summer training plan with me, in-person at the Aztec Recreation Center or online, and save $100. Just write "Summer Gym" and I'll get back to you with more details.

Hi Reader,This weekend we were all robbed an hour of sleep and promised extra sunlight would make up for it. Maybe it will eventually, but not right away. Keep active and keep moving. It'll help you find your natural rythm in...
